Avarice Puppyfoot, or Ava for short, is the richest of the sins. Her eyes are filled with gold and her pouches are never empty. They were not always a rich Captain among the Cardinal Sins though. It’s not easy to say stories from her past are true; they change with the wind, constantly adapting to the oceans’ current.
Some say she grew up on the streets, pickpocketing for her earnings and stealing food along the way, leaving her wandering city to city to avoid getting caught, or worse. One day, she found herself on a ship filled with gold and her eyes grew wide. As she was filling her pouches, greedier than she’d ever been before, she was caught. The captain, later introduced as Shufflin' Lewis Cohen, nabbed her and gave her two options: get thrown overboard or earn her stay. With no desire to drown, Ava chose to stay aboard the ship and worked her way up the ranks of the 52 Pick Up.
The memory of the gold stockpile constantly pulled at the back of her thoughts. At first, she would visit the overflowing chests just to look, resisting the temptation to take any for herself. It didn’t take long for her to indulge in the riches, though. At first, it was just one piece, but that was never enough. She craved heavier and heavier pouches. When the captain found out, he shocked everyone aboard.
He let her keep every piece.
But not without a price. She was thrown overboard, pulled underwater by her own greed. She vowed to herself that if she survived, she would never sail again without being her own captain. She slammed her eyes shut as she was pulled under a final time, no longer able to stay above water. She started begging for help from any being who would listen. She had to survive. Losing to the likes of Cohen was not an option.
But you know what they say, don’t make a deal after dark…
