Captain’s Bio
Character: Sebastian “Jax” Jackson
Card: Jack of Spades
The Sin: Envy
AKA: One-Eyed Jax, The Old Man of the Sea, The Keelhaul Knave
Wanted For: Defiance of Common Law, Dueling, Impersonating a Priest, Attempted Mutiny and Piracy of ships in the North Atlantic and Caribbean Seas.
Not much is known about the origin of Captain Jax. Originally from Scotland, Sebastian took to the sea at an early age and was successful as an able seaman, and eventually ship’s helmsman. Desiring to see the world, he became well traveled, sailing to ports on both sides of the Atlantic and even making trips to Madagascar and the east coast of Africa. After a lifetime at sea, he was on the verge of becoming a Ship’s Captain, when he strangely disappeared for almost five years...
He returned just as mysteriously as he had left, appearing suddenly as the helmsman for Captain Lewis Cohen aboard the 52 Pick Up. Cohen never asked what had happened, only stating later that Jax, “keep his cards close to his chest”. It was rumored that he was marooned for wooing another captain’s wife. Or in prison for attempted mutiny. Or just drunk on a beach. Where exactly seems to vary with each telling. Upon his return he was a haunted shadow of a man. Deeply displeased with the status quo, he now possessed a mercurial, yet often contradictory, personality.
Much the same can be said about the loss of his right eye during this time. One story he told was of a cannon accident whilst on a privateering commision. Another was of a failed duel from a long-standing feud with a rival, possibly over a woman. And yet another of his stories says it was taken as payment on a debt.
As helmsman, he spent two years with Cohen, regaining strength and a dark desire. He met his fellow sins during this time. Never able to find satisfaction, even among his cohorts, he became a, “Jack of all sins, yet a master of none”, learning lessons from each before departing amicably to “settle accounts” and finally become a Captain in his own right.
Since then, as Captain of the ‘Revenant’, he has been seen most frequently in the company of Captain Nazmidran Tovi. Their dark history, occasionally “privateering” together since leaving the 52 Pick Up, is filled more with whispered myths than known facts. No matter his story, Jax is not one to be trifled with and he does not suffer fools. As the most senior of the sins, whenever they gather, the others offer a quiet deference. And few dare to disturb his dark envious nature, held in check just below the surface…
